Task force takes on race restrictions in deeds, calls for state bill for pilot program

A task force committee wants several neighborhood, civic and business organizations to sign a resolution condemning outdated race restrictions language embedded within legal documents for residential properties.

Members of the task force, created after sharp public outcry, said support from these organizations will help push efforts forward in addressing an issue complicated by bureaucratic red tape and development practices dating back decades.

Florida Rep. Loranne Ausley, who sits on the task force, said she and State Sen. Bill Montford may consider co-sponsoring a proposed bill for a pilot program to work with the Clerk’s Office. Some task force members urged action across the state, which could be a costly endeavor.

“If we can accomplish what this group wants us to accomplish by doing that, that might be easier than mandating changes across the state,” Ausley said. “There are states that have been trying to figure this out for a long time without a lot of success … everybody has to act within its own state contract and real estate law. But, it’s complicated and, yes, we’re still trying to figure this out.”
